Website scraping is the process of extracting useful information from other websites on the internet for the purpose of using that data. This is the same concept which search engine crawlers use to extract information from websites and then use that data to rank websites on search terms.
I have scraped several websites online for my clients who used that data to compare prices of their products with their competitors. This helped them to know whether their prices were higher or lower than their competitors and allowed them to make adjustments accordingly. This allowed them to do away with manual help and save time (and ultimately money as well) on the whole process.
How do you scrape a website?
- I first study the website structure and the data I need to extract from the desired pages.
- I then compile a script which will fetch the data from the website and do a test run.
- Once the file is fetching the desired information from the website I run the script.
- The script generates a CSV file of the data which is then processed by the system/website of the client.
